Attorney DeYoung has a diverse litigation background with experience in civil litigation, family law and criminal defense. He was admitted to the State Courts of Massachusetts in 1979 and is also admitted to the United States District Court, District of Massachusetts. Attorney DeYoung is a general practitioner and has handled matters in various legal areas over his career. Attorney DeYoung graduated Southeastern Massachusetts University (1976) and Suffolk University Law School (1979).
The First Justices of the Probate and Family Courts regularly recognize Attorney DeYoung for his Pro Bono work by awarding him the First Justices Award. While Attorney DeYoung accepts any Pro Bono appointment made by the Courts, one of Attorney DeYoung most notable contributions was with the Attorney Representing Children (“ARC”) Program. Attorney DeYoung, working alongside the Honorable Judge Robert Scandurra, created the ARC program to provide representation to children in highly contentious custody matters. Counties from across the state have adopted the ARC program as the Justices of the Probate and Family Court have held the child’s voice to be invaluable in the decision-making process.
Most recently, the Barnstable County Bar Association named Attorney DeYoung the 2016 Attorney of the Year, an award voted on by his colleagues and peers in the legal community. Additionally, Attorney DeYoung was awarded the 2016 Client Satisfaction Award by the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys. Both awards are presented to experienced counsel whom have shown tremendous skill and quality in their field.
Attorney DeYoung is a member of the Massachusetts and Barnstable Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Attorney DeYoung actively participates in his local community, most specifically the Town of Yarmouth, where he served on the Planning Board for a number of years and is presently the chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Attorney DeYoung has been involved in numerous high profile civil and criminal cases in both the state and federal courts. One such case, Attorney DeYoung was lead counsel for Timothy L. Biliouris and presented the oral argument before the Massachusetts Appeals Court for the prevailing party in the landmark pre-marital agreement case of Biliouris v. Biliouris, 67 Mass.App.Ct. 149 (2006).
Attorney DeYoung recently started providing affordable mediation as a professional divorce mediator as requested through the Probate and Family Court and by appointment. Attorney DeYoung acts as a “neutral” and works with both parties and their counsel to develop an agreement with mutually agreed-upon terms and conditions for your divorce, separation and/or domestic relations matter. Attorney DeYoung offers quality guidance by using his extensive experience as a litigator through the mediation process.
